The South Swan Creek Loop Trail is a 5.7-mile loop trail located in Allegan State Game Area in Michigan. It is a popular trail for hikers, birdwatchers, and campers. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Here’s a video of the trail.

The trail begins and ends at the M-118th Avenue dam. From the dam, the trail follows Swan Creek Pond to 116th Avenue, then returns on the pond’s other side. The trail passes through a variety of habitats, including forests, marshes, and open fields.

South Swan Creek Loop Trail

Along the way, you can see a variety of wildlife, including deer, rabbits, ducks, geese, and turtles. You may also see some of the many wildflowers that bloom in the area, such as:

Spring wildflowers: trilliums, jack-in-the-pulpit, spring beauties, mayapples, and wild geraniums.

Summer wildflowers: daisies, black-eyed Susans, goldenrod, and asters.

Fall wildflowers: goldenrod, asters, and witch hazel.

This trail is a fairly easy trail, making it a great option for families and beginner hikers. The trail is also fairly well-maintained (with one caveat), making it easy to follow. However, there are a few areas where the trail can be muddy, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. Also, there are dozens of trees down across the trail. This makes you have to climb over, go under, or go around. Be prepared for this.

If you are looking for a beautiful and easy hike in Michigan, the South Swan Creek Loop Trail is a great option. Here are some tips for hiking the South Swan Creek Loop Trail:

Start early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Additional Trail Information

The trail is open year-round, but it is best to hike during the spring or fall when the weather is mild.

There are two parking areas for the trail: one at the M-118th Avenue dam and one at the 116th Avenue parking lot.

This is a state game area. Hunting is allowed, which means you should wear bright colors and be aware of the hunting seasons that are happening during your hike.

The trail is well-marked in most areas, but it is a good idea to bring a map with you. There are several other trails and two-tracks in the area.

There are a few places where the trail can be muddy, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear.

Be sure to leave no trace when you hike.

As of this writing (8-22-2023), it appears that the north east section of this trail has been clear cut over. There isn’t a trail to follow other than a path made by a logging vehicle (it does go along the mapped route per Alltrails). However, there are no markings here, so be aware of that.

We hope you enjoy your hike on the South Swan Creek Loop Trail!

In honor of World Lion Day, let’s take a look at some mountain lion safety tips. Yes, mountain lions are cute, but they are also dangerous to encounter in the outdoors. Mountain lions (also known as cougars, pumas, and panthers) have a large range, stretching from coast to coast of the United States. They have been seen passing through states such as Michigan. Mountain lions are solitary creatures, unless a female is caring for young mountain lions.

Puma Profiles

Did you know that the U.S. National Park Service has been studying mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains. You can find some individual puma profiles here.

Mountain Lion Safety Tips

These tips are taking from the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. National Park Service.

Do not run from a mountain lion. Running can stimulate a mountain lion’s instinct to chase. You’ll lose this race.

Keep children close to you.

Do not approach a lion. Seems obvious, but…

If you do see a mountain lion, do what you can to appear larger. Raise your arms, shout, open your jacket, etc. Make sure the mountain lion knows you’re there and can see them. They prefer to hunt stealthily and ambush their prey.

Do not crouch or bend over. This makes you vulnerable.

Fight back if attacked. Playing dead isn’t an effective option in this scenario.

Don’t hike alone. No matter where you’re hiking, this is always a good safety rule to follow.

While mountain lion attacks are rare, they can be fatal. In the past 100 years, there has been nearly 2 dozen fatalities caused by mountain lions.
The North Country Trail is a long-distance hiking trail that spans over 4,600 miles through the United States, from North Dakota to New York. The trail passes through some of the country’s most beautiful and remote areas, including national forests, state parks, and wilderness areas. In this blog post, we will explore the history of the North Country Trail, its unique features, and what makes it a must-visit destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Check out the North Country Trail Association for more.

History of the North Country Trail

The North Country Trail was established in 1980 as part of the National Trails System Act. It was created by merging several trails, including the Finger Lakes Trail, the Buckeye Trail, and the Superior Hiking Trail. The NCT is designed to showcase the natural beauty and diversity of the northern United States and promote recreation, education, and conservation.

Features of the North Country Trail

The North Country Trail offers many landscapes and ecosystems, including rugged mountains, rolling hills, vast prairies, and deep forests. Hikers can enjoy a variety of experiences along the trail, from backcountry camping and wildlife watching to waterfall hikes and historic sites.

One of the unique features of the North Country Trail is its accessibility. The trail passes through hundreds of public and private lands, making access from many different points easy. It also offers a range of hiking options, from day hikes to multi-day backpacking trips.

In addition to its natural beauty, the North Country Trail also features a rich cultural history. The trail passes through numerous historic sites, including Native American settlements, logging towns such as Lowell, Michigan, and mining communities. Hikers can learn about the history and culture of the northern United States while enjoying the scenic beauty of the trail. One drawback of the North Country Trail is a fair amount of road hiking occasionally happens between off-road sections. But one great feature is that this trail is easily accessible and broken up into sections. So unlike other trails, such as the Appalachian Trail, it’s something that you could conceivably hike but broken up nicely over a few weeks for a few years. Of course, you can also through-hike it, as many people do.

<script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3910081242656655"

Why Hike the North Country Trail?

Hiking the North Country Trail is an adventure of a lifetime. The trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the northern United States. Whether you are an experienced hiker or a beginner, there is something for everyone along the trail.

Hiking the North Country Trail also offers numerous health benefits. Spending time in nature reduces stress, improves mood, and boosts physical health. Hiking can also be a great way to connect with friends and family or enjoy solitude and reflection.

Conclusion

The North Country Trail is a unique and inspiring destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. With its stunning natural beauty, rich cultural history, and accessibility, the trail offers something for everyone. Whether looking for a weekend hike or a multi-month backpacking trip, the NCT will surely be an unforgettable experience. So lace up your hiking boots, grab your backpack, and hit the trail!

Hiking is a great way to get outside, exercise, and connect with nature. If you’re new to hiking, it can seem intimidating, but with a few tips and tricks, you’ll be ready to hit the trails quickly. Here’s a quick guide for hiking for beginners.

Hiking For Beginners

Start Small

As a beginner, you don’t need to tackle a 10-mile (or more!) hike on your first trip. Start small and work your way up. Look for easy hikes 2-3 miles long with minimal elevation gain. Local parks are a great place to begin.

Check the Weather

Before you head out, check the weather forecast. Hiking in the rain or snow can be dangerous, so plan your hike accordingly. Also, the weather can change quickly. What looks like a nice day for a hike could become problematic.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655"
     data-ad-slot="9081357449"></ins>

Dress Appropriately

Wear comfortable, breathable clothing and sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good traction. Dress in layers so you can easily adjust to changing temperatures. Pay attention to the weather. Getting too hot or cold can negatively affect your health and make your hiking experience less enjoyable.

Bring the Right Gear

In addition to proper footwear, you’ll want to bring a backpack(the Osprey Hikelite 18 is a great day pack), a map or trail guide (for short hikes, your phone will probably work), sunscreen, insect repellent, and plenty of water and snacks. Remember a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun. Also, bringing a compass and basic first aid with you is a good idea.

Know Your Limits

Listen to your body, and don’t push yourself too hard. Take breaks when necessary, and turn around if you feel uncomfortable or tired.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655"
     data-ad-slot="9081357449"></ins>

Leave No Trace

Hiking is a great way to enjoy the beauty of nature, but it’s important to leave the trail as you found it. Pack out all your trash and respect wildlife by keeping a safe distance.

Hike with a Friend

Hiking with a friend can be more fun and provide an added level of safety. Make sure someone knows your planned route and expected return time.

Learn Trail Etiquette

When hiking on a trail, be aware of others around you. This hiking etiquette list from the National Park Service is a great starting point for learning trail etiquette.

Reading More

Now that you’ve started hiking, it’s time to think about becoming an official backpacker!
Essential Backpacking Gear List

Backpack

Tent

Sleeping Bag

Sleeping Pad

Water Filtration System

Stove and Fuel

Cookware

Clothing

Navigation Tools

First Aid Kit

Headlamp

Multitool

Each of these items should be carefully selected based on your planned trip and your experience level. Every backpacking adventure will be at least slightly different than the previous, so it’s important to plan ahead.

Essential Backpacking Gear Explained

Backpack

The backpack is the most crucial piece of gear for backpacking. It should fit your body well and distribute weight evenly to prevent discomfort and back pain. Look for backpacks with adjustable straps and support systems that can handle the weight of your gear. Find a nearby outdoor store like REI and try on some backpacks in person. Here’s a post about selecting the write backpacking for your trip.

Tent

A reliable and sturdy tent is necessary for backpacking. It should be lightweight, easy to set up, and durable to withstand harsh weather conditions. Select a tent that can accommodate the number of people in your group and has adequate ventilation.

Sleeping bag

A suitable sleeping bag will keep you warm and comfortable during chilly nights. It should be lightweight, easy to pack and it should have a temperature rating that matches the expected weather conditions.

Sleeping pad

An inflatable sleeping pad such as the Klymit Static V, provides insulation and cushioning, preventing discomfort and heat loss. It should be lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry in your backpack.

Water filtration system

Clean water is essential for backpacking, and a water filtration system (we love the Sawyer Mini!) ensures access to safe drinking water. Look for systems that are easy to use, lightweight, and durable.

Stove and fuel

A stove allows you to cook meals and boil water on the trail. Select a lightweight and compact stove that runs on backpacking fuel, such as canister or liquid fuel. This post has a few recommendations.

Cookware

Cookware is necessary for preparing meals on the trail. Choose lightweight, durable pots and pans that can withstand high heat and are easy to clean. At the very least, you’ll want something to boil for your dehydrated meals and coffee.

Clothing

The proper clothing is crucial for backpacking. Bring lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing that dries quickly, protects you from the sun, and keeps you warm during colder weather.

Navigation tools

Navigation tools, such as maps and a compass, are necessary for staying on course during backpacking trips. A GPS device or a smartphone with GPS capabilities can also be helpful.

First aid kit

A first aid kit is essential for treating injuries and illnesses on the trail. It should contain important items such as bandages, pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, and insect repellent.

Headlamp

A headlamp provides hands-free lighting for hiking in the dark or low-light conditions. It should be lightweight and have a long battery life.

Multi-tool

A multi-tool is a handy tool that can perform various functions, such as cutting, screwing, and opening cans. It can come in handy in unexpected situations.

Essential Backpacking Gear

Backpacking requires proper planning and preparation, including selecting the right gear. A backpack, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, water filtration system, stove and fuel, cookware, clothing, navigation tools, first aid kit, headlamp, and multi-tool are essential for a successful backpacking trip. Select lightweight, durable, and easy-to-use gear to ensure a safe and enjoyable outdoor adventure. Remember that you may have other required gear depending on where you’re going backpacking. If you’re backpacking in bear country, you must bring a bear bag or bear canister (check the regulations), and you’ll want to carry bear spray.

Backpacking can be an incredible experience, allowing you to explore and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life. However, to fully enjoy your backpacking adventure, having the essential backpacking gear is crucial. Investing in quality gear and taking the time to plan and prepare can help ensure a successful and enjoyable backpacking trip. So, before embarking on your next outdoor adventure, pack the essential gear to maximize your experience and stay safe on the trail.

Features

Why Bring An Ax Camping

Fire starting. For some people, a crucial aspect of camping is staying warm and cooking food over a campfire. But to do that, having a reliable source of fire is essential. You can use an ax to split firewood and create kindling for starting a fire.

Build a shelter. You can use an ax to construct a shelter in an emergency if your tent is damaged or unavailable. Also, you can use axes to cut down saplings and brush for shelter-building material.

Clear a path. If you’re camping in a remote area, you may need to clear a path to your campsite. You can use an ax to chop down overgrown vegetation, making it easier to get around. Please only do this if obviously necessary and follow the laws and regulations in the area you will be camping or backpacking in.

Safety. In an emergency, you can use an ax for self-defense against wild animals. It’s important to note that you should only use an ax in self-defense as a last resort.

Of course, no ax is going to be considered ultralight. However, the Fiskars X15 chopping ax will be as close to a functional ultralight ax as you’ll find. Whether you bring an ax with you camping or backpacking depends on where you’re going, how long you’ll be there, your anticipated needs, and your camping style.
