It’s hot out there. In this article, we’ll talk about staying safe and cool while hiking. The summer of 2023 has turned out to be incredibly hot all over the globe, prompting concerns about heat-related issues during outdoor activities such as running and hiking. Globally, June was the hottest June on record. Then July was the hottest July on record. While August has cooled slightly in the United States, it appears that we’re gearing up for more heat to close out the rest of the month. Just this past week Phoenix, Arizona tied a record at 115 degrees and Helena, Montana set a new record of 102 degrees. So like I said, it’s hot out there.

<script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3910081242656655"

The heat has greatly impacted outdoor activities and lead to tragedy. The New York Times reported that seven hikers have died so far due to heat-related illnesses while hiking this summer in the Southwest. These have been in state and national parks as well, not as remote as they could be (here are some tips on staying safe in the wilderness).

The Impact of Heat on the Body: Our bodies rely on a delicate balance of temperature regulation. Engaging in outdoor activities under the scorching sun can lead to various heat-related issues, ranging from mild discomfort to severe health risks. It’s important to be aware of these issues to recognize their symptoms and take proactive steps to mitigate them.

Common Heat-Related Issues

Heat Exhaustion: This occurs when the body overheats, often due to inadequate hydration and prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Symptoms include excessive sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea, and weakness.

Heat Stroke: The most severe heat-related condition, heat stroke requires immediate medical attention. It’s characterized by a dangerously high body temperature, confusion, hot and dry skin, rapid breathing, and even loss of consciousness.

Dehydration: Inadequate fluid intake can lead to dehydration, causing fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, and decreased urine output. Severe dehydration can result in organ failure and heat-related illnesses.

Heat Cramps: Intense physical activity in hot conditions can cause muscle cramps due to electrolyte imbalances resulting from excessive sweating.

<script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3910081242656655"

Here Are Some Tips For Staying Safe & Cool

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after outdoor activities. Avoid excessive caffeine (I know, I know-I live on coffee too) and alcohol, as they contribute to dehydration.

Plan and Pace Yourself: Schedule outdoor activities during cooler hours, such as early morning or late afternoon. Take frequent breaks and rest in the shade to avoid overexertion.

Dress Wisely: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that covers your skin to protect it from the sun. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses.

Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body is responding to the heat. If you or your companions experience symptoms of heat-related issues, take action immediately.

Know the Signs: Be familiar with the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or don’t improve after taking preventive measures.

Staying Safe

As outdoor adventurers, it’s our responsibility to enjoy the beauty of nature while also prioritizing our safety and well-being. If we understand the risks associated with heat-related issues during activities and take appropriate precautions, we can continue to explore, hike, bike, and adventure with confidence. Remember, preparation and awareness are key to ensuring that the heat doesn’t dampen our outdoor spirits. Stay safe and stay cool!
In honor of World Lion Day, let’s take a look at some mountain lion safety tips. Yes, mountain lions are cute, but they are also dangerous to encounter in the outdoors. Mountain lions (also known as cougars, pumas, and panthers) have a large range, stretching from coast to coast of the United States. They have been seen passing through states such as Michigan. Mountain lions are solitary creatures, unless a female is caring for young mountain lions.

Puma Profiles

Did you know that the U.S. National Park Service has been studying mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains. You can find some individual puma profiles here.

Mountain Lion Safety Tips

These tips are taking from the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. National Park Service.

Do not run from a mountain lion. Running can stimulate a mountain lion’s instinct to chase. You’ll lose this race.

Keep children close to you.

Do not approach a lion. Seems obvious, but…

If you do see a mountain lion, do what you can to appear larger. Raise your arms, shout, open your jacket, etc. Make sure the mountain lion knows you’re there and can see them. They prefer to hunt stealthily and ambush their prey.

Do not crouch or bend over. This makes you vulnerable.

Fight back if attacked. Playing dead isn’t an effective option in this scenario.

Don’t hike alone. No matter where you’re hiking, this is always a good safety rule to follow.

Mountain Lion Safety Tips

While mountain lion attacks are rare, they can be fatal. In the past 100 years, there has been nearly 2 dozen fatalities caused by mountain lions.
Understanding Heat Illnesses in Dogs

Heat Exhaustion: Dogs are susceptible to heat exhaustion when they are exposed to high temperatures and excessive physical activity. Common signs include heavy panting, lethargy, rapid breathing, drooling, and a bright red tongue. In severe cases, your dog might collapse or vomit.

Heat Stroke: Heat stroke is a more severe condition that can occur when a dog’s body temperature rises dangerously high. Symptoms include a body temperature of 104°F or higher, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizures. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.

Dehydration: Dehydration can sneak up on dogs quickly during hikes. Watch for signs like sticky gums, dry nose, sunken eyes, and reduced skin elasticity. Ensuring your dog has access to fresh water at all times is crucial.

What to Look for While Hiking

Monitor Your Dog’s Behavior: Keep a close eye on your dog’s behavior throughout the hike. If you notice excessive panting, slowing down, or seeking shade, it’s time to take a break.

Stay Hydrated: Carry enough water for both you and your dog. Make regular stops for your dog to drink, and be mindful of their hydration levels.

Time Your Hike: Plan your hikes during cooler times of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. Avoid hiking during peak heat hours to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Provide Shade: Look for shaded areas during your hike where your dog can rest and cool down. A collapsible canopy or a dog-friendly cooling vest can provide additional relief.

Know Your Dog’s Limits: Just like humans, dogs have different tolerance levels for heat. Short-snouted breeds and older dogs are more susceptible to heat-related issues, so adjust your hiking plans accordingly.

As the warmer months approach, many of us are looking forward to spending time in the great outdoors. However, one thing that can quickly put a damper on any outdoor excursion is pesky insect bites. Bug bites can be not only irritating but also potentially dangerous if not treated properly. In this blog post, we will discuss some ways to treat bug bites while in the woods and which insects to watch out for in the Midwest.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:728px;height:180px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655"
     data-ad-slot="2986685361"></ins>

What To Watch Out For

First, let’s discuss some common insects you may encounter in the Midwest and their potential dangers. Mosquitoes are a nuisance and can transmit diseases such as West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. Ticks can carry Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. Bees, wasps, and hornets can cause allergic reactions in some people. Chiggers, also known as harvest mites, can leave itchy bites that can last for days. Bot flies, while rare, do present a potential hazard as well, even in Michigan. Deer flies, black flies, and still other flies can leave nasty bites and be persistent. A good method of protection is to bring a face net with you on your hikes.

Treating Bug Bites

Now, let’s talk about ways to treat bug bites while in the woods. The first step is to wash the affected area with soap and water. This helps remove any dirt or bacteria that may have been introduced by the insect. After washing, apply a cold compress to the bite to reduce swelling and relieve itching. If you have access to an antihistamine cream or spray, this can also help alleviate itching and swelling.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:728px;height:180px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655"
     data-ad-slot="2986685361"></ins>

For tick bites, it’s important to remove the tick as soon as possible using tweezers. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady, even pressure. Avoid twisting or jerking the tick, as this can cause the mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin. After removing the tick, wash the bite site with soap and water and apply an antiseptic.

If you are experiencing an allergic reaction to a bite, such as swelling or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. An epinephrine auto-injector, such as an EpiPen, can be life-saving in the case of severe allergic reactions.

Preventing Bites

Prevention is always the best approach when it comes to bug bites. Wear long sleeves and pants when possible, use insect repellent containing DEET, and avoid areas with high insect activity, such as standing water and wooded areas.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:728px;height:180px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655"
     data-ad-slot="2986685361"></ins>

In summary, bug bites can be a nuisance and potentially dangerous if not treated properly. Be aware of the insects in your area and take steps to prevent bites. If you are bitten, wash the affected area, apply a cold compress, and use antihistamine cream or spray if available. If you are experiencing an allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately. With these tips in mind, you can enjoy your time in the great outdoors without worrying about pesky insect bites.

What Fishing Line To Use For Steelhead? Steelhead fishing is a popular activity among anglers around the world. In Michigan, we pack local rivers when steelhead make their way to their ancestral spawning grounds (ok, most are released there after being raised on a fish farm). It’s not unusual to see Lake Michigan piers packed with fishermen and women during the summer to target Skamania steelhead when bait fish come close to shore. Fly fishing for steelhead?
These fish are known for their acrobatic jumps and powerful runs, making them a challenging but delightful catch. However, to successfully catch steelhead, you must have the right fishing gear, including the right fishing line.

What Fishing Line To Use For Steelhead?

Choosing the right fishing line for steelhead fishing can be tricky, as many options are available. Consider factors like water clarity, fishing location, and the size of the fish you will target when selecting a fishing line. This blog post will discuss the types of fishing lines suitable for steelhead fishing. Pair your fishing line with a float in order to fish with spawn bags or shrimp.

The Best Choice: Fluorocarbon Fishing Line

Fluorocarbon fishing lines are a popular option for steelhead fishing, and for a good reason. Fluorocarbon is the best option for steelhead fishing as it is stronger than monofilament but has high tensile strength. Steelhead are athletic fish. Fluorocarbon fishing lines are made from a denser material than monofilament, which makes them more resistant to abrasion and ideal for fishing in clear water. Fluorocarbon lines are also less visible underwater, which makes them an excellent choice for wary fish like steelhead. Here’s some great information on winter steelhead fishing.

Monofilament Fishing Line

Monofilament fishing line is a popular choice for steelhead fishing. It is a single strand of nylon, which makes it affordable, flexible, and easy to use. This type of fishing line is suitable for beginners and experienced anglers alike. Monofilament lines are available in different sizes, and the pound test of the line should be matched to the size of the fish you are targeting. KastKing line is among the better monofilament line choices.

Braid Fishing Line

Braid fishing lines are becoming increasingly popular among anglers. A braided line is an excellent option for fishing for catfish or similar fish; steelhead fishing requires a different line. It’ll snap. If you do prefer to use braid for steelhead, make sure you’re using a fluorocarbon leader.

What Are The Current Michigan Steelhead Fishing Regulations?

You can find the current Michigan fishing regulations for steelhead on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website. Please note that the 2023 fishing year ends on March 31st, 2024. Make sure to review 2024’s fishing guidebook once it’s available for any updated regulations and requirements.

Spring is an excellent time for bluegill fishing as the water warms up and the fish becomes more active. These feisty panfish can provide hours of fun for anglers of all skill levels, and there are many techniques you can use to catch them. This blog post will cover some of the best spring bluegill fishing techniques to help you have a successful day on the water.

Use Live Bait

One of the most effective techniques for catching bluegill is live bait. Worms, crickets, and small minnows are all great choices. Bluegill have small mouths, so using a small hook and not too much bait is essential. You want the bait to be just small enough for the bluegill to swallow whole.

Cast Near Cover

Bluegill love to hang out near cover like weeds, logs, and fallen trees. They use these areas as hiding places and to ambush prey. Try casting your bait near these areas, and let it sit there for a few seconds before slowly reeling it in. If you don’t get a bite, try casting to a different spot near the cover.

Use a Float

A float, also called a bobber, can be a great way to catch bluegill. Attach a small float to your line, and adjust it, so your bait sits just above the bottom of the water. When a bluegill takes the bait, the float will disappear below the surface, alerting you to the bite.

Fish at Different Depths

Bluegill can be found at different depths depending on the time of day and the water temperature. In the morning and evening, they may be closer to the surface, while during the heat of the day, they may be deeper. Experiment with fishing at different depths to see where the bluegill are biting.

Use Small Lures

Small jigs, spinners, and crankbaits can effectively catch bluegill if you prefer using lures instead of live bait. Look for lures that mimic the small insects and minnows that bluegill feed on.

Fish Slowly

Bluegill are not aggressive feeders during cool temperatures, so it’s essential to fish slowly and patiently. When using live bait, let it sit still for a few seconds before reeling it in slowly. When using lures, reel them in slowly and frequently pause to give the bluegill a chance to bite.

Spring Bluegill Fishing Techniques

Spring bluegill fishing can be a fun and rewarding experience. You can increase your chances of catching these feisty panfish by using live bait, casting near cover, using a float, fishing at different depths, using small lures, and fishing slowly. Remember to be patient and enjoy the experience of being out on the water.

Basic First Aid Tips for Camping

Camping is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the great outdoors. But even though you’re surrounded by nature, some risks are still involved. That’s why it’s crucial to prepare for any minor injuries or illnesses that may occur. So let’s discuss some basic first aid tips for camping.

<script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3910081242656655"

Basic First Aid Tips For Camping

Bring a first aid kit: This is a no-brainer. Ensure your first aid kit has bandages, antibiotic ointment, pain relievers, and other essentials. You can buy a pre-made first aid kit or put together your own. When assembling your first aid kit, include items specific to your needs and your camping activities. For example, if you are hiking, include things such as moleskin and blister pads.

Learn basic first aid: Even if you’re not a certified first responder, knowing the basics of first aid is helpful. This includes stopping bleeding, treating minor burns, and performing CPR. Many resources are available to help you learn basic first aid, such as online courses, books, and videos. It doesn’t hurt to get certified in first aid or CPR by the American Red Cross, either.

Be aware of your surroundings: This is especially important when camping in an unfamiliar area. Look for potential hazards, such as poisonous plants, sharp objects, and dangerous animals. If you are unfamiliar with the area, doing some research before you go is a good idea. This will help you be aware of potential dangers and how to avoid them.

Take precautions against insect bites and stings: This includes using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and avoiding areas where insects are known to be present. When choosing an insect repellent, be sure to select one that is DEET-based and appropriate for the type of insects you will be encountering. You should also reapply the repellent as directed. When you do get bit, After Bite is a great post-bite product to use.

More First Aid Tips

Stay hydrated: It’s important to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather. Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks. Dehydration can lead to heat stroke, which is a severe medical condition. To stay hydrated, drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Eat healthy foods: Eating healthy foods will help keep you energized and prevent illness. Avoid processed foods and sugary drinks. Eating healthy foods will help your body fight off infection and stay healthy.

Get enough sleep: Getting enough sleep will help your body recover from any injuries or illnesses. Aim for 8 hours of sleep per night. Lack of sleep can make you more susceptible to illness and injury.

Be prepared for the unexpected: Even if you take all the necessary precautions, there’s always a chance that something unexpected could happen. That’s why it’s crucial to be prepared for anything. This includes having a plan in place in case of an emergency. This plan should consist of how you will get help if someone is injured, stay warm if it gets cold, and find food and water if you get lost.

Following these basic first-aid tips can help ensure your next camping trip is safe and enjoyable. Please consult with your doctor and other personal healthcare providers about steps you should take that are specific to your individual health needs and goals.

10 Tips for Camping with Kids

Camping with kids can be a great way to create lasting memories and teach them about the importance of the outdoors. However, it can also be challenging, especially if you’re not used to camping with children. Here are ten tips to help you succeed in your next camping trip with kids.

Tips For Camping With Kids

Choose the right campsite. When choosing a campsite, it’s important to consider the age and interests of your children. If you have young children, you’ll want to select a campsite close to amenities like bathrooms and showers. Many Michigan state parks are great places to camp with children. If you have older children, choose a more remote campsite that offers more opportunities for hiking, fishing, and other activities.

Pack plenty of food and drinks. Kids can be hungry and thirsty, especially when they’re active. Be sure to pack plenty of food and drinks for your trip, and pack snacks that are easy to eat on the go.

Bring along activities to keep the kids entertained. Kids can get bored quickly, so it’s important to bring along activities to keep them entertained. You could bring books, games, toys, or even just a deck of cards.

Be prepared for bad weather. Even if the weather forecast is good, it’s always a good idea to be prepared for bad weather. Also, pack rain gear, warm clothes, and other essentials you may need if the weather changes.

Go slow and steady. Don’t try to do too much on your first camping trip with kids. Start with a short trip and gradually increase the length of your trips as your children get older and more experienced.

Be patient. Kids can be unpredictable, so it’s important to be patient. Stay calm if they don’t want to do what you want them to do. Just relax, enjoy the moment, and maximize your time together.

Have fun! Camping with kids can be a lot of fun. Enjoy the outdoors, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Here are some additional tips for camping with kids

Let the kids help with the planning and preparation. This will help them feel more involved and excited about the trip. Even looking at maps beforehand can be a great way to include them in planning the trip.

Set realistic expectations. Don’t expect the kids to behave perfectly the whole time (obviously, keep them safe). Just go with the flow and have fun.

Be flexible. Things sometimes go differently than planned when you’re camping with kids. Be prepared to change things up if necessary.

Take lots of pictures. You’ll want to remember all the fun you had with your kids on your camping trip.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block; text-align:center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655" data-ad-slot="9081357449"></ins>

Hopefully these 10 tips for camping with kids helps you realize that it’s not impossible to do. With some planning and preparation, camping with kids can be a great way to create lasting memories and teach them about the importance of the outdoors. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start planning your next camping trip with kids!
