Fishing the Grand River at Eastmanville Bayou usually yields a variety of species caught, including some decent-sized channel catfish (especially into late summer/early fall). While the weather was gorgeous this evening, the fishing was slow. Fishing Eastmanville Bayou’s Grand River kayak access does tend to be decent.

We managed one drum (sheepshead), one small channel catfish, and one larger channel catfish all caught on nightcrawlers. Could not catch any small panfish to use as bait. Smaller fish didn’t seem to be utilizing the usual holes this evening. Cutbait typically works well here, especially towards the end of summer as fish are in a final feed frenzy. Catching some small panfish to use is always a priority and we typically have a rod dedicated to finding them. But it appears that they haven’t moved into shallow river areas as of yet. The spring cool down we experienced in May seems to have slowed things down a bit.

The Weather

The weather was tolerable. By the time we were catching fish it had cooled off to 55 degrees, but clear and very little wind, measuring from the west at 6 miles per hour. Humidity was 84% and the dewpoint of 50 degrees. Pressure was 29.95 and falling. Overall, was a great night to be out on the water.

While the river had gone down quite a bit from the previous week (we get out to this location often), there were still a large amount of grass, mud, and leaves that were flowing down the river and getting caught in the fishing lines and weights.

Basic Catfish Rigs

Fishing Eastmanville Bayou

Fishing the Grand River at Eastmanville Bayou usually leads to a mixed catch. Fish you can plan on catching include channel catfish, freshwater drum, bluegill, and the occasional bass. During the spring, it is possible to catch suckers as they move up river.

Fishing For Smallmouth Bass at Fallasburg Park

Fished the early evening hours of April 19, 2025. It was breezy, but mostly sunny. The air temps were in the 50s, but were tolerable. A white Rooster tail was the hot lure today. Targeted areas with structure, focusing mostly on underneath the wooden bridge. With a slow retrieved against the current, managed to locate two smallmouth bass. One of them was quite nice in size and color, as seen in the above YouTube video.

When fishing in Michigan, it’s important to make sure that you have the right fishing gear. Be sure to check out YUMEOWL’s Fishing Plier Set (Amazon Affiliate link).

Spring Smallmouth Bass Fishing

Fishing for smallmouth bass in the Spring can lead to great results. However, do so carefully. While it is catch and immediate release season in Michigan, these fish are either preparing to spawn, spawning, or post spawn. These fish can be quite fragile. Handle with care!

Spring Smallmouth Bass Fishing Tips

Spring in Michigan marks the start of some incredible smallmouth bass fishing opportunities. As waters warm and bass move from their winter depths toward spawning areas, anglers who understand these transitions can experience trophy-class fishing. Here’s a quick guide to help you target Michigan smallmouth bass this spring.

Understanding Spring Smallmouth Behavior

Spring smallmouth fishing in Michigan follows a predictable pattern that can be broken down into three distinct phases:

Pre-Spawn (45-55°F)

Bass are moving from winter holdover areas to staging areas near spawning flats. They’re actively feeding to build energy reserves for the spawning process. This is often when the largest bass of the year are caught.

Spawn (55-65°F)

When water temperatures stabilize in the mid-50s to mid-60s, smallmouth create nests in shallow areas with gravel or sandy bottoms. Males become territorial and aggressive during this period.

Post-Spawn (65°F+)

After spawning, smallmouth recover in deeper water near their spawning areas before establishing summer patterns. They’re often found near drop-offs adjacent to spawning flats.

There’s something deeply satisfying about gliding across water, connecting with nature through each paddle stroke. But what if your kayaking adventures could contribute to preserving the very waterways you enjoy? Conservation-minded paddling trips offer the perfect blend of outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship, allowing you to give back to the aquatic ecosystems that provide so much joy.

The Unique Position of Paddlers as Environmental Stewards

As kayakers and canoeists, we access waterways in a way few others can. We navigate narrow channels, discover hidden coves, and witness firsthand both the pristine beauty and unfortunately, the environmental challenges facing our waters. This unique perspective makes paddlers ideal environmental ambassadors.

“Paddlers are often the first to notice changes in water quality, invasive species, or pollution issues,” explains Maria Sanchez, aquatic biologist and founder of the Watershed Paddlers Alliance. “They become the eyes and ears for environmental monitoring, reaching areas that would otherwise go unobserved.”

Organized Cleanup Paddling Events

National Organizations Leading the Way

Several national organizations coordinate paddling-based cleanup events that you can join:

American Rivers’ National River Cleanup® hosts events across the country where paddlers collect trash from waterways while enjoying a day on the water. Their website features an interactive map of upcoming events.

Surfrider Foundation’s Paddle Out Plastic program focuses on coastal waterways and features kayak-based cleanups targeting marine debris.

American Canoe Association’s Stream to Sea Initiative combines paddling instruction with conservation activities, making it perfect for beginners wanting to develop skills while contributing.

Local Opportunities

Don’t overlook local watershed associations and paddling clubs that often organize regularly scheduled cleanup events. These smaller, community-based efforts can have tremendous impact:

Check with your local paddling shop or club for upcoming conservation paddles

Follow regional waterkeeper organizations on social media

Contact your state’s environmental protection department for volunteer opportunities

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-layout-key="-fb+5w+4e-db+86"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-5047747726015521"
     data-ad-slot="9394904940"></ins>

DIY Cleanup Paddles

Can’t find an organized event? Create your own:

Gather a small group of paddling friends

Equip each boat with:

Heavy-duty trash bags

Gloves

Grabber tools for reaching debris

Separate containers for recyclables

Focus on areas where debris collects (eddies, strainers, inner bends)

Document your findings to share with local environmental agencies

Celebrate your efforts afterward!

Pro tip: Many municipalities will arrange special pickup of collected trash if notified in advance of your cleanup efforts.

Citizen Science Opportunities for Paddlers

Beyond trash removal, paddlers can contribute valuable scientific data through citizen science initiatives:

Water Quality Monitoring

Programs like the Waterkeeper Alliance’s Water Reporter app allow paddlers to document water quality issues through geotagged photos and observations. The World Water Monitoring Challenge provides affordable test kits to measure basic water quality parameters.

“A kayaker with a simple water quality test kit can help create a comprehensive picture of watershed health that would be impossible for professionals to gather alone,” notes Dr. James Peterson, freshwater ecologist. “It’s crowd-sourced conservation.”

Wildlife Observation and Tracking

eBird lets paddlers record bird sightings, particularly valuable for water birds and shoreline species

iNaturalist enables documentation of all flora and fauna encountered during paddling trips

FrogWatch USA trains volunteers to monitor amphibian populations, often accessible only by water

Invasive Species Detection

Early detection of invasive aquatic plants and animals is crucial for effective management. Programs like The Invasive Species Early Detection Network train paddlers to identify and report problematic species.

Many states now have specific apps for reporting invasive species sightings, making it easy to contribute from your smartphone right on the water.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-layout-key="-fb+5w+4e-db+86"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-5047747726015521"
     data-ad-slot="9394904940"></ins>

Planning Your Conservation Paddling Trip

Essential Gear for Conservation Paddling

Beyond standard paddling equipment, consider adding:

Mesh collection bags that drain water but contain debris

Sturdy gloves resistant to sharp objects

Collapsible buckets for larger items

Smartphone in waterproof case for documentation

Compact water quality testing equipment

Field guides for species identification

Dry bag for scientific equipment

Safety Considerations

Conservation paddling involves unique safety challenges:

Never handle hazardous materials (chemical containers, sharp medical waste)

Be cautious of added boat instability when collecting items

Report rather than attempt to remove extremely large debris

Maintain proper immunizations when regularly exposed to water quality issues

Follow proper protocols for documenting rather than disturbing wildlife

Spotlight: Notable Conservation Paddling Destinations

1. Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota

This pristine wilderness area benefits from the “Leave No Trace” monitoring by paddlers who document campsites and portage conditions while enjoying world-class canoeing.

2. Florida’s Coastal Waterways

The Florida Microplastic Awareness Project engages paddlers to collect water samples while exploring mangrove ecosystems and coastal waters.

3. Chesapeake Bay Watershed

The Chesapeake Monitoring Cooperative trains paddlers to collect water quality data throughout the bay’s extensive tributary system.

4. Colorado River Basin

Various citizen science initiatives monitor water quality and invasive species along this critical waterway, with paddlers contributing valuable data.

Building Community Through Conservation Paddling

One of the most rewarding aspects of conservation paddling is the community it builds. Annual events like the Ohio River Sweep, which spans six states, bring together thousands of paddlers for a common cause.

How Your Paddling Club Can Get Involved

Adopt a specific waterway section for regular monitoring and cleanup

Partner with local schools for educational programming

Develop a mentorship program pairing experienced conservation paddlers with newcomers

Create a photo documentation project showing improvements over time

Connect with scientists at local universities for guidance on meaningful data collection

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-layout-key="-fb+5w+4e-db+86"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-5047747726015521"
     data-ad-slot="9394904940"></ins>

The Ripple Effect

Your conservation paddling efforts create impacts far beyond the immediate environmental benefits:

Heightened awareness among fellow paddlers and the broader community

Data that informs policy decisions and protection efforts

Educational opportunities for youth and newcomers to paddling

A deeper personal connection to your local waterways

As paddler and river advocate Jess Thompson puts it, “Once you’ve spent a day cleaning up a river, you never see it the same way again. You become its guardian, not just its visitor.”

Getting Started

Ready to transform your paddling adventures into conservation action? Start by:

Researching local watershed groups and conservation organizations

Remember, every piece of debris removed and every data point collected contributes to healthier waterways for generations of paddlers to come.

Whether you’re drawn to the satisfaction of a cleanup paddle, the scientific engagement of citizen science, or simply wanting to give back to the waters that bring you joy, conservation paddling offers meaningful ways to combine recreation with purpose.

CMI Rescue 8 Descender

The CMI Rescue 8 Descender is a great descending tool for low angle applications. There are several similar products available, including Petzl’s figure 8 descender. There are also many lower-priced options available on Amazon and eBay, however, I’d stay away from those for anything that requires trusting it with your weight and potentially your life. One common complaint with the Rescue 8 is that it increases rope twist. I haven’t seen that as a major issue as of yet. Another common issue is the lack of progress capture. This can be accomplished by tying a prusik above the Rescue 8 and then attaching it to your carabiner that has your Rescue 8 attached.

CMI Rescue 8 Descender Summary

The CMI Rescue 8 Descender is a versatile and durable belay device designed for technical rescue, rope access, and rappelling. Made from high-strength aluminum alloy, it features a large frame that efficiently dissipates heat during descents, reducing rope wear and minimizing risk of overheating. The flat style of this product makes it a great addition to a go bag or SAR bag.

Key Features:

Material: Lightweight yet durable aluminum construction.

Size: Large design accommodates a wide range of rope diameters.

Efficiency: Smooth control of descent speed with multiple friction configurations.

Versatility: Suitable for technical rescue, industrial rope access, and firefighter operations.

Compatibility: Works with single and double rope systems.

Camping allows us to disconnect from modern conveniences, but staying off the grid doesn’t mean you must give up your electronics. Portable solar panel kits provide a reliable, eco-friendly solution to charge your devices and power small appliances while enjoying nature. However, with many options on the market, choosing the right solar panel can take time and effort. This article highlights some of the best solar panel kits available for campers. We’ll also explain the differences between power levels and what various power levels can charge.

Why Use Portable Solar Panels for Camping?

Portable solar panel kits harness the sun’s power and convert it into usable electricity for camping gear. Depending on size, they are lightweight and easy to carry and offer a sustainable way to keep gadgets running without relying on disposable batteries or gas-powered generators. Solar panels can provide power without creating noise or pollution, whether you need to charge your phone, GPS, or even a portable fridge.

Recommended Portable Solar Panel Kits

Here are five of the best portable solar panel kits for camping. These panels are geared to different needs, from backpackers, car campers to more rugged, off-the-grid adventurers.

Understanding Solar Panel Power Levels

When shopping for portable solar panels, it’s helpful to understand the differences in the power levels of solar panels and what they can charge. The power output of solar panels is measured in watts, which is how quickly and efficiently a panel can charge your devices. Here’s a breakdown of what different wattage levels can typically power:

10-20 Watts: Small solar panels in this range are best for low-power devices like smartphones, GPS units, and headlamps. They’re ideal for short trips or ultralight backpacking, requiring minimal charging.

20-50 Watts: This range is great for charging multiple small devices or one larger device, such as a tablet or a small camera. These panels are often more versatile and may include USB ports or adapters for direct charging.

50-100 Watts: Medium-sized panels in this category should be able to charge larger devices like laptops, portable refrigerators, or small battery packs. They’re suitable for longer camping trips with a higher power demand.

100+ Watts: These high-output panels are perfect for campers who need to power several devices or appliances simultaneously, including larger power stations. You’ll want a panel in this range if you plan to use solar power for your entire campsite, including lights, fans, or a portable fridge.

What to Consider When Choosing a Solar Panel Kit

Portability: Weight and size are crucial factors for portable solar panels. Depending on how much you plan to move, you may want something lightweight and foldable, like the Anker 21W for backpacking, or a larger, more powerful kit for base camping.

Weather Resistance: Since solar panels rely on sunlight, they must also be durable enough to withstand harsh weather conditions. Waterproof and scratch-resistant panels are more useful in unpredictable outdoor environments.

Power Storage: Many solar panel kits have built-in or compatible battery packs to store the energy generated. Batteries are critical if you need power at night or during cloudy days when direct sunlight is unavailable.

Conclusion

Portable solar panels can be a great tool for camping. They offer a clean and sustainable way to keep your devices charged while you enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re an ultralight backpacker or a base camper looking to power a small refrigerator, there’s a solar panel kit that will suit your needs. With a suitable solar panel kit, you can keep your gadgets and electronics running and extend your time off the grid.

Fishing for smallmouth bass in the Thornapple River at Leslie E. Tassell Park can bring a mixed bag of successes and failures. Normally, there are a few Bass and Pike that make for a fun afternoon or evening of fishing. However, on this day (April 26, 2024), the fishing was slow and difficult. Admittedly, it’s a bit early in the season, however, water levels appear to be keeping fish in deeper holes than normal for this time of year.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Fishing For Smallmouth Bass at Leslie E.

The Weather

It was around 60 degrees with overcast skies, and storms in the surrounding areas. The water was quite shallow and stained. Even the pond above the dam was significantly lower than it has been at this time for several years. Without decent rainfall, come summer, these rivers may be mostly unfishable due to low water levels and elevated water temperatures. It’ll be an interesting summer. Hopefully we pick up some decent rainfall in the coming months and avoid fish die-offs.

Results

While locating holes where fish were holding was difficult, we did manage to catch a couple of small Smallmouth Bass utilizing Mepps spinners. If the bite is difficult, Mepps spinners can be among the only things that will trigger a bite. I like to drift them downstream while reeling slowly, allowing them to swing through holes behind structure where I think that there may be fish.

About The Park

Leslie E. Tassell Park is a small park along the Thornapple River in Cascade Township (just outside of Grand Rapids). It’s a nice park that features two small parking areas. Picnic tables and a picnic shelter make this a nice stopping point for a canoe or kayak trip down (or up!) the Thornapple River. The park can be found at: 2900 Thornapple River Dr SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.

Smallmouth Bass Fishing

Many of Michigan’s rivers and lakes offer awesome smallmouth Bass fishing opportunities(including our Great Lakes). While it’s not a species we target heavily, it can make for a nice change of pace from chasing stream trout. Bivvy Creek (our fly fishing brand) is releasing some bass poppers! Be sure to check them out here.

Kayaking is a great outdoor activity that allows people to explore waterways and connect with nature. The great thing about kayaking is that you can kayak in nearly all kinds of water, from oceans to whitewater rivers and everything in between. However, like any outdoor activity, kayaking comes with risks. These risks include changing weather conditions and unexpected emergencies on the water. This quick guide will delve into kayak safety gear every paddler should have to ensure safe and enjoyable paddling adventures.

Essential Kayak Safety Gear

Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

The first and most crucial piece of kayak safety gear is a personal flotation device (PFD). Also known as a life jacket, a PFD is designed to keep you buoyant and afloat in the water in case of capsizing or immersion. When choosing a PFD, choose one that is designed for paddling. These should feature adjustable straps, a secure fit, and ample buoyancy to keep you safe on the water. Also, ensure that your PFD is designed for the type of water you will be kayaking in. Always, always wear your life jacket while kayaking.

Helmet

When whitewater kayaking or paddling in rocky rivers, a helmet is critical to protect your head from potential impacts with rocks, debris, or other obstacles in the water. Look for a kayak-specific helmet with a durable shell, comfortable padding, and adjustable straps to ensure a secure and comfortable fit while paddling. Also, a helmet is a good idea for offshore and nearshore kayaking. When paddling through surf and other waves, the possibility of being pushed onto rocks and shoals can be a concern. A helmet can mitigate some of that risk.

Kayak Bilge Pump

A bilge pump is a necessary tool for removing water from your kayak. It’s important if you capsize or otherwise become swamped, such as during a heavy rain. Compact and lightweight, a bilge pump allows you to quickly and efficiently pump water out of your kayak to prevent it from becoming waterlogged and sinking. Choose a pump with a comfortable grip and a high-capacity pumping action for effective water removal.

More Kayak Safety Gear Recommendations

Paddle Float

A paddle float is a safety device that can aid self-rescue techniques if you capsize or find yourself in the water. It attaches to one end of your paddle. A paddle float provides added buoyancy and stability, which will allow you to perform a paddle float re-entry and re-enter your kayak from the water safely. Practice using your paddle float in calm water conditions to build confidence and proficiency in self-rescue techniques. You can also take a kayak safety course where self-rescue techniques are taught and practiced.

Whistle or Signaling Device

A whistle or signaling device is an essential piece of kayak safety gear for attracting attention and signaling for help in case of emergency. Attach a waterproof whistle to your PFD or kayak deck and use it to alert nearby boaters, paddlers, or rescuers if you require assistance on the water. Ensure your whistle is loud, audible, and easily accessible in case of emergency.

Navigation Tools

Navigation tools such as a map, compass, or GPS device are essential for safe and successful paddling adventures, especially in unfamiliar or remote waterways. Carry a waterproof map of your paddling area and familiarize yourself with landmarks, navigational aids, and potential hazards such as rocks, rapids, or submerged obstacles. Use a compass or GPS device to maintain your heading and navigate safely to your destination.

First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first aid kit is critical for addressing minor injuries while paddling. A first aid kit will allow you to treat medical emergencies, and to provide light medical care while paddling. Pack your first aid kit with basic supplies such as adhesive bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and blister treatment. Also, include any personal medications, allergy medication, or emergency medications that you may require while on the water.

Communication Device

In an emergency, a communication device such as a marine VHF radio, waterproof mobile phone, or personal locator beacon (PLB) can be critical for calling assistance and alerting rescuers to your location. Carry a communication device in a waterproof case or dry bag and ensure it is fully charged and accessible while paddling. While space on a kayak is tight, it’s a good idea to have redundant systems. Many paddlers opt for a PLB along with their mobile phone. When venturing offshore and nearshore, mobile cell phone service can be spotty if available at all. A floating marine VHF radio should be an important consideration.

Emergency Blanket or Shelter

In the event of an emergency or unexpected overnight stay on the water, an emergency blanket or shelter can provide essential protection from the elements and help you retain body heat to prevent hypothermia. Pack a lightweight, compact emergency blanket or shelter (such as a bivvy bag) in your kayak’s storage compartment or dry bag for added safety and peace of mind while paddling.

Kayak Tow Line

A kayak tow line is a valuable safety accessory for assisting other paddlers. Choose a kayak tow line with a strong, durable construction, quick-release mechanism, and reflective details for increased visibility in low-light conditions. Practice using your kayak tow line with a partner to ensure efficient and effective towing techniques in emergencies.

Conclusion

Safety should always be a top priority when embarking on a kayaking adventure, and having the correct safety gear can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable paddling experience. Investing in kayak safety gear such as a personal flotation device, helmet, bilge pump, and paddle float, among others, paddlers can minimize potential risks. Our gear suggestions can also enhance your preparedness, enabling you to enjoy paddling adventures with confidence. Remember to always paddle responsibly, stay vigilant, and prioritize safety on the water. Safe paddling!

Kayak Safety Tips

Wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

The first rule of kayak safety is to always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD) while on the water. A PFD is critical for buoyancy and can save your life should an accidental capsize or immersion occur. Choose a PFD that is designed specifically for kayaking, with adjustable straps and adequate buoyancy to keep you afloat. Also, consider where you’ll be kayaking when choosing a PFD. Not all PFDs are made equal. Some PFDs perform better in inland lakes, while others are better suited for nearshore waters.

Know Your Equipment

Before hitting the water, familiarize yourself with your kayak and its equipment. Understand how to adjust the foot pegs, operate the paddle, and utilize safety features such as deck lines and bungee cords. Practice entering and exiting the kayak from shore and practice basic paddling techniques to build confidence and proficiency. Consider adding a paddle float to your gear list.

Check the Weather Forecast

Check the weather forecast and water conditions before heading out on a kayaking adventure. Avoid kayaking in inclement weather, strong winds, or rough seas, as these conditions can pose significant risks to safety. Be aware of changing weather patterns and seek shelter or return to shore if conditions deteriorate unexpectedly.

Dress Appropriately

Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature, as immersion in cold water can lead to hypothermia, even on warm days. Wear moisture-wicking clothing and layers that can be adjusted for temperature changes. Consider wearing a wetsuit or drysuit for added insulation and protection from the elements.

Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Bring an adequate supply of water and snacks to stay hydrated and nourished during your kayaking trip. Pack lightweight, non-perishable snacks such as energy bars, nuts, and dried fruits to fuel your paddling adventures. Stay hydrated by sipping water regularly and avoid consuming alcohol or caffeine, which can dehydrate the body.

Plan Your Route

Before setting out on a kayaking excursion, plan your kayaking route carefully. Also, let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Familiarize yourself with waterways, landmarks, and potential hazards such as rocks, rapids, and currents. Consider potential tides, currents, and wind direction when planning your route and adjust accordingly to ensure a safe and enjoyable paddling experience.

Practice Self-Rescue Techniques

Perhaps the most important of these kayak safety tips is to practice self-rescue. In the event of a capsize or swamping, knowing how to perform self-rescue techniques is essential for kayak safety. Practice re-entering your kayak from the water, both with and without assistance. Also, familiarize yourself with techniques such as the paddle float re-entry, T-rescue, and roll. Carry essential safety gear such as a bilge pump, paddle float, and rescue stirrup to aid in self-rescue efforts. A good rule of thumb is to find a quiet, sheltered lake to practice these techniques before adventuring into more dangerous water.

Stay Visible

Increase your visibility on the water by wearing bright-colored clothing and attaching reflective tape to your kayak and paddle. Use a waterproof whistle or signaling device to attract attention in case of emergency and carry a waterproof flashlight or strobe light for visibility during low-light conditions or nighttime paddling.

Respect the Wildlife and Environment

Kayakers (and everyone who enjoys outdoor recreation) should always respect wildlife and natural habitats. Observe wildlife from a safe distance, avoid disturbing nesting areas or sensitive ecosystems, and adhere to local regulations and guidelines for wildlife protection. Practice leave-no-trace principles and pack out all trash and waste to minimize your impact.

Stay Calm and Be Prepared

While we never expect an emergency to happen, it’s critical to stay calm, assess the situation, and respond accordingly. Carry a well-stocked first aid kit, emergency communication device, like a marine radio, and navigation tools such as a map and compass to assist in emergencies. Practice basic navigation and survival skills such as signaling for help, building a shelter, and administering first aid to ensure you’re prepared for any scenario.

Conclusion

Kayaking can be a great activity that offers endless opportunities for adventure and exploration. Follow these ten essential kayak safety tips to minimize risks, enhance enjoyment, and ensure a safe and memorable time on the water. Remember to prioritize safety, stay vigilant, and respect the power and beauty of the natural world as you embark on your kayaking adventures. Safe paddling!

Michigan offers a great opportunity for adventure enthusiasts to explore its waterways by kayaking. Moreover, you can even camp on several islands in the state that are accessible by kayaking. This is a wonderful way to enjoy a summer or spring kayaking and camping trip. Let’s have a look at 4 of the islands that you can kayak to and camp on in Michigan.

It’s important to note that most of these islands are located in the Great Lakes. Therefore, sea kayaks are a minimum requirement, and it’s advisable to have PFDs (these are a requirement) and emergency equipment such as a marine radio before setting out.
One of the 36 islands located in the Les Cheneaux Islands group off the coast of the Upper Peninsula in Lake Huron is Government Island. Although many of the islands are private, Government Island is part of the Hiawatha National Forest and is open for camping and other recreational activities. The best way to reach this island is by heading out of Cedarville.
Yes, there are at least two Government Islands in Michigan. One of them is situated on the Manistee River, between the Tippy Dam and Hodenpyle Dam. It’s a highly popular area for camping and hiking, especially during summer months. However, finding a suitable campsite can be challenging due to the high demand. The island can be accessed from Government Landing, and as part of the Huron-Manistee National Forest, it allows dispersed camping. You can reach Government Island via recreational canoe or kayak, but please ensure that you prioritize safety while doing so. Reserve a campsite at Government Landing and make it a weekend.

Grand Island off of the coast of Munising in Michigan’s Upper Peninsual and near Pictured Rocks is an adventurer’s paradise. The isand sits in Lake Superior and is about half a mile off of the coast of Munising. There is a ferry which runs from the mainland to Grand Island, which you could transport your kayak and camping gear on. However, when the weather is good, it is possible to paddle a sea kayak out to Grand Island. Please note that Lake Superior is essentially always cold. Wetsuits and sprayskirts are good ideas.

Power Island

Power Island is a beautiful island situated in Grand Traverse Bay. It can be reached only by boat from Bower’s Harbor Marina and Clinch Park Marina.
Hiking Essentials

1. The Right Footwear: Finding Your Sole Mate

First things first, let’s talk about the most important piece of gear for any hiker: your footwear. Since you’ll be on your feet, this is a crucial piece of gear to get right. A good pair of hiking boots or shoes can make all the difference between a blissful trek and a painful ordeal. Look for shoes that offer sturdy support, excellent traction, and waterproofing if you’ll be hiking in wet conditions. And don’t forget to break them in before hitting the trails—your feet will thank you later! Also, consider adding some moleskin or a similar blister relief product to your kit. Taking care of your feet is incredibly important for an enjoyable hike.

2. Pack It Up: Choosing the Perfect Backpack

Next up, you’ll need a reliable backpack to carry all your gear and essentials. When it comes to backpacks, size matters. Opt for a pack that’s big enough to hold everything you need without being too bulky or cumbersome. Look for features like padded shoulder straps, adjustable waist belts, and multiple compartments for easy organization. And don’t forget to pack light—every ounce counts when you’re hitting the trails! Consider the length of the hike. Are you just hiking for the day or are you planning on a multi-day hike that includes camping? How does the backpack fit on your shoulders? With so many different options and styles available, choosing the perfect backpack can take some work.

3. Dress for Success: Layering Up for Comfort

When it comes to dressing for a hike, layering is your best friend. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat at bay, add an insulating mid-layer for warmth, and top it off with a waterproof outer shell to fend off rain and wind. Don’t forget to pack a hat, gloves, and extra socks, just in case the weather takes a turn. And remember, it’s always better to overdress and shed layers as needed than to be caught unprepared!

4. Hydration Station: Staying Quenched on the Trail

Staying hydrated is crucial when you’re out hiking, especially on hot summer days or high-altitude hikes. Invest in a durable water bottle or hydration pack to make sure that you drink plenty of fluids throughout your hike. Consider bringing along a water purification system (such as a Lifestraw) or water purification tablets if you’ll be drinking from natural sources like streams or lakes. And don’t forget to pack some snacks to keep your energy levels up along the way!

5. Navigation Tools: Finding Your Way

Last but not least, don’t forget to bring along a navigation tool or two to help you find your way on the trail. A reliable map and compass are essential, especially if you’re hiking in remote or unfamiliar terrain. Consider bringing along a GPS device such as the Garmin InReach 2 or a smartphone with a GPS app for added peace of mind. Keep in mind-phones and GPS devices run out of batteries! Always have a backup method of navigation. And don’t forget to familiarize yourself with your route before setting out—it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
