9 Ways to Practice Environmentally Friendly Camping

Posted on March 24, 2023March 24, 2023 by packandpaddle

Camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But it’s important to adopt environmentally friendly camping practices way so that we can protect the places we love.

Here are 9 tips for environmentally friendly camping:

  1. Pack out what you pack in. This means taking all of your trash with you when you leave, including food scraps, paper, and plastic. If you see any trash left behind by other campers, pick it up and take it with you.
  2. Leave no trace. This means camping in a way that does not disturb the environment. Don’t build fires in areas where they could start wildfires. Don’t trample on vegetation. And don’t leave any evidence of your presence behind.
  3. Choose a sustainable campsite. When choosing a campsite, look for one that is already established and has minimal impact on the environment. Avoid camping in areas that are sensitive to human impact, such as wetlands or areas with rare plants or animals.
  4. Use sustainable gear. When choosing camping gear, look for items that are made from recycled materials or that are made to last. Avoid using disposable items, such as paper plates and plastic utensils. Buy used gear. Use environmentally friendly soaps such as CampSuds.
  5. Take shorter showers. When showering, use water sparingly. You can also collect rainwater to use for showers.
  6. Cook your meals over a campfire. If you’re cooking your meals over a campfire, use wood that has already fallen to the ground. Avoid cutting down live trees.
  7. Dispose of human waste properly. When using the restroom, dig a hole at least 6 inches deep and 200 feet away from water sources. Bury your waste and then cover it with dirt.
  8. Support sustainable businesses. When you’re camping, support businesses that are committed to sustainability. Look for businesses that use eco-friendly products and services.
  9. Educate yourself and others. The more you learn about environmentally friendly camping, the more you can do to protect the places you love. Educate yourself about the latest sustainable practices and share what you know with others.

By following these tips, you can help to ensure that camping remains a sustainable activity for years to come.
