Bush Bay Trail, also known as Narnia Trail, in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan is an amazing hike. It’s located on Bush Bay, along the shores of Lake Huron, just east of Cedarville. Bush Bay Trail is one of the premier trails in all of Michigan. Climbing over rocks and through cedar swamps certainly adds a magical touch to this hike. You might feel as though you could come across a faun at any point! This is an incredibly family-friendly trail. Kids are going to love the boulders and wildflowers. Adults are going to appreciate the serene air (Ok, the boulders are fun for adults too). And of course, the lampost is a favorite sight.

The trail features a large amount of moss-covered dolomite boulders that make it almost magical to explore. It’s about a four mile round trip hike. However, the trail does connect to the nearby John Arthur Woollam Nature Preserve, meaning that you could hike for quite a bit further than four miles.

There is a lot of wildlife to see and hear in Bush Bay. Pileated woodpeckers, deer, frogs, gulls, and assorted ducks in the bay will keep you entertained. Wildflowers abound here too. The trees are a mix of cedar trees and pine trees, and there are some beautiful birch trees to see (a personal favorite).

Getting There

Located in Clark Township, Bush Bay Trail is about 45 minutes east of St. Ignace (Here’s a Google Maps pin to navigate to). The parking lot is a nondescript lot just off of M-134. There’s literally nothing marking it as the trail head. There are also no bathrooms located at this trail head-so keep that in mind when planning your trip. Cell service can be spotty, though we had ample Verizon coverage on our hike here.

What To Bring

Planning on hiking the Bush Bay Trail? Here’s a few things to bring.

Camera. Bring a camera-this natural area offers several opportunities for stunning photos.

First Aid kit. There are wet rocks, and it’s a bit remote. Make sure you’ve got some bandages, and perhaps an ankle wrap and moleskin packed. Just in case.

Water. Water is important on any hike, and especially on a hike where the trail can go on and on, it’s always a good idea to make sure you’ve got water. Consider a hydro pack, such as the Osprey Syncro 12.

Bush Bay Trail

This trail should definitely make your Michigan hiking bucket list. And since it’s not far from St. Ignace, it would be an easy hike to add on to just about any Upper Peninsula trip. Be prepared for emergencies, and know your surroundings. Our goal is to help you explore Michigan and beyond, but you have to look out for your personal safety.

Nearby Adventures

Kayaking and Camping on Government Island. This blog post describes a kayaking and camping adventure on Government Island, part of Michigan’s Les Cheneaux Islands in Lake Huron. We outline the journey, which began in foggy conditions and involved paddling through headwinds and narrow channels. After reaching the island, we set up camp on the northern shore, explored trails, and encountered local wildlife, including deer. The post also highlights the island’s rustic charm, the importance of preparation, and the joy of outdoor adventure. The experience offered a mix of kayaking, hiking, and scenic camping.

Hiking Essentials

1. The Right Footwear: Finding Your Sole Mate

First things first, let’s talk about the most important piece of gear for any hiker: your footwear. Since you’ll be on your feet, this is a crucial piece of gear to get right. A good pair of hiking boots or shoes can make all the difference between a blissful trek and a painful ordeal. Look for shoes that offer sturdy support, excellent traction, and waterproofing if you’ll be hiking in wet conditions. And don’t forget to break them in before hitting the trails—your feet will thank you later! Also, consider adding some moleskin or a similar blister relief product to your kit. Taking care of your feet is incredibly important for an enjoyable hike.

2. Pack It Up: Choosing the Perfect Backpack

Next up, you’ll need a reliable backpack to carry all your gear and essentials. When it comes to backpacks, size matters. Opt for a pack that’s big enough to hold everything you need without being too bulky or cumbersome. Look for features like padded shoulder straps, adjustable waist belts, and multiple compartments for easy organization. And don’t forget to pack light—every ounce counts when you’re hitting the trails! Consider the length of the hike. Are you just hiking for the day or are you planning on a multi-day hike that includes camping? How does the backpack fit on your shoulders? With so many different options and styles available, choosing the perfect backpack can take some work.

3. Dress for Success: Layering Up for Comfort

When it comes to dressing for a hike, layering is your best friend. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat at bay, add an insulating mid-layer for warmth, and top it off with a waterproof outer shell to fend off rain and wind. Don’t forget to pack a hat, gloves, and extra socks, just in case the weather takes a turn. And remember, it’s always better to overdress and shed layers as needed than to be caught unprepared!

4. Hydration Station: Staying Quenched on the Trail

Staying hydrated is crucial when you’re out hiking, especially on hot summer days or high-altitude hikes. Invest in a durable water bottle or hydration pack to make sure that you drink plenty of fluids throughout your hike. Consider bringing along a water purification system (such as a Lifestraw) or water purification tablets if you’ll be drinking from natural sources like streams or lakes. And don’t forget to pack some snacks to keep your energy levels up along the way!

5. Navigation Tools: Finding Your Way

Last but not least, don’t forget to bring along a navigation tool or two to help you find your way on the trail. A reliable map and compass are essential, especially if you’re hiking in remote or unfamiliar terrain. Consider bringing along a GPS device such as the Garmin InReach 2 or a smartphone with a GPS app for added peace of mind. Keep in mind-phones and GPS devices run out of batteries! Always have a backup method of navigation. And don’t forget to familiarize yourself with your route before setting out—it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Beginner’s Guide To Hiking Essentials

So lace up those boots, pack your bags, and hit the trails—it’s time to embrace the great outdoors and embark on your very own epic hiking adventure! Happy trails!

Yes! It’s almost that time of year. However, outdoor activities can still be enjoyable in the snow.
The South Swan Creek Loop Trail is a 5.7-mile loop trail located in Allegan State Game Area in Michigan. It is a popular trail for hikers, birdwatchers, and campers. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Here’s a video of the trail.

The trail begins and ends at the M-118th Avenue dam. From the dam, the trail follows Swan Creek Pond to 116th Avenue, then returns on the pond’s other side. The trail passes through a variety of habitats, including forests, marshes, and open fields.

South Swan Creek Loop Trail

Along the way, you can see a variety of wildlife, including deer, rabbits, ducks, geese, and turtles. You may also see some of the many wildflowers that bloom in the area, such as:

Spring wildflowers: trilliums, jack-in-the-pulpit, spring beauties, mayapples, and wild geraniums.

Summer wildflowers: daisies, black-eyed Susans, goldenrod, and asters.

Fall wildflowers: goldenrod, asters, and witch hazel.

This trail is a fairly easy trail, making it a great option for families and beginner hikers. The trail is also fairly well-maintained (with one caveat), making it easy to follow. However, there are a few areas where the trail can be muddy, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. Also, there are dozens of trees down across the trail. This makes you have to climb over, go under, or go around. Be prepared for this.

Additional Trail Information

The trail is open year-round, but it is best to hike during the spring or fall when the weather is mild.

There are two parking areas for the trail: one at the M-118th Avenue dam and one at the 116th Avenue parking lot.

This is a state game area. Hunting is allowed, which means you should wear bright colors and be aware of the hunting seasons that are happening during your hike.

The trail is well-marked in most areas, but it is a good idea to bring a map with you. There are several other trails and two-tracks in the area.

There are a few places where the trail can be muddy, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear.

Be sure to leave no trace when you hike.

As of this writing (8-22-2023), it appears that the north east section of this trail has been clear cut over. There isn’t a trail to follow other than a path made by a logging vehicle (it does go along the mapped route per Alltrails). However, there are no markings here, so be aware of that.

We hope you enjoy your hike on the South Swan Creek Loop Trail!

It’s hot out there. In this article, we’ll talk about staying safe and cool while hiking. The summer of 2023 has turned out to be incredibly hot all over the globe, prompting concerns about heat-related issues during outdoor activities such as running and hiking. Globally, June was the hottest June on record. Then July was the hottest July on record. While August has cooled slightly in the United States, it appears that we’re gearing up for more heat to close out the rest of the month. Just this past week Phoenix, Arizona tied a record at 115 degrees and Helena, Montana set a new record of 102 degrees. So like I said, it’s hot out there.

<script async src="https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3910081242656655"

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655"
     data-ad-slot="4755286317"></ins>

The heat has greatly impacted outdoor activities and lead to tragedy. The New York Times reported that seven hikers have died so far due to heat-related illnesses while hiking this summer in the Southwest. These have been in state and national parks as well, not as remote as they could be (here are some tips on staying safe in the wilderness).

The Impact of Heat on the Body: Our bodies rely on a delicate balance of temperature regulation. Engaging in outdoor activities under the scorching sun can lead to various heat-related issues, ranging from mild discomfort to severe health risks. It’s important to be aware of these issues to recognize their symptoms and take proactive steps to mitigate them.

Common Heat-Related Issues

Heat Exhaustion: This occurs when the body overheats, often due to inadequate hydration and prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Symptoms include excessive sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea, and weakness.

Heat Stroke: The most severe heat-related condition, heat stroke requires immediate medical attention. It’s characterized by a dangerously high body temperature, confusion, hot and dry skin, rapid breathing, and even loss of consciousness.

Dehydration: Inadequate fluid intake can lead to dehydration, causing fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth, and decreased urine output. Severe dehydration can result in organ failure and heat-related illnesses.

Heat Cramps: Intense physical activity in hot conditions can cause muscle cramps due to electrolyte imbalances resulting from excessive sweating.

Here Are Some Tips For Staying Safe & Cool

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after outdoor activities. Avoid excessive caffeine (I know, I know-I live on coffee too) and alcohol, as they contribute to dehydration.

Plan and Pace Yourself: Schedule outdoor activities during cooler hours, such as early morning or late afternoon. Take frequent breaks and rest in the shade to avoid overexertion.

Dress Wisely: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that covers your skin to protect it from the sun. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses.

Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body is responding to the heat. If you or your companions experience symptoms of heat-related issues, take action immediately.

Know the Signs: Be familiar with the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or don’t improve after taking preventive measures.

Staying Safe

As outdoor adventurers, it’s our responsibility to enjoy the beauty of nature while also prioritizing our safety and well-being. If we understand the risks associated with heat-related issues during activities and take appropriate precautions, we can continue to explore, hike, bike, and adventure with confidence. Remember, preparation and awareness are key to ensuring that the heat doesn’t dampen our outdoor spirits. Stay safe and stay cool!
In honor of World Lion Day, let’s take a look at some mountain lion safety tips. Yes, mountain lions are cute, but they are also dangerous to encounter in the outdoors. Mountain lions (also known as cougars, pumas, and panthers) have a large range, stretching from coast to coast of the United States. They have been seen passing through states such as Michigan. Mountain lions are solitary creatures, unless a female is caring for young mountain lions.

Puma Profiles

Did you know that the U.S. National Park Service has been studying mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains. You can find some individual puma profiles here.

Mountain Lion Safety Tips

These tips are taking from the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. National Park Service.

Do not run from a mountain lion. Running can stimulate a mountain lion’s instinct to chase. You’ll lose this race.

Keep children close to you.

Do not approach a lion. Seems obvious, but…

If you do see a mountain lion, do what you can to appear larger. Raise your arms, shout, open your jacket, etc. Make sure the mountain lion knows you’re there and can see them. They prefer to hunt stealthily and ambush their prey.

Do not crouch or bend over. This makes you vulnerable.

Fight back if attacked. Playing dead isn’t an effective option in this scenario.

Don’t hike alone. No matter where you’re hiking, this is always a good safety rule to follow.

Understanding Heat Illnesses in Dogs

Heat Exhaustion: Dogs are susceptible to heat exhaustion when they are exposed to high temperatures and excessive physical activity. Common signs include heavy panting, lethargy, rapid breathing, drooling, and a bright red tongue. In severe cases, your dog might collapse or vomit.

Heat Stroke: Heat stroke is a more severe condition that can occur when a dog’s body temperature rises dangerously high. Symptoms include a body temperature of 104°F or higher, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizures. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.

Dehydration: Dehydration can sneak up on dogs quickly during hikes. Watch for signs like sticky gums, dry nose, sunken eyes, and reduced skin elasticity. Ensuring your dog has access to fresh water at all times is crucial.

What to Look for While Hiking

Monitor Your Dog’s Behavior: Keep a close eye on your dog’s behavior throughout the hike. If you notice excessive panting, slowing down, or seeking shade, it’s time to take a break.

Stay Hydrated: Carry enough water for both you and your dog. Make regular stops for your dog to drink, and be mindful of their hydration levels.

Time Your Hike: Plan your hikes during cooler times of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. Avoid hiking during peak heat hours to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Provide Shade: Look for shaded areas during your hike where your dog can rest and cool down. A collapsible canopy or a dog-friendly cooling vest can provide additional relief.

Know Your Dog’s Limits: Just like humans, dogs have different tolerance levels for heat. Short-snouted breeds and older dogs are more susceptible to heat-related issues, so adjust your hiking plans accordingly.

As the warmer months approach, many of us are looking forward to spending time in the great outdoors. However, one thing that can quickly put a damper on any outdoor excursion is pesky insect bites. Bug bites can be not only irritating but also potentially dangerous if not treated properly. In this blog post, we will discuss some ways to treat bug bites while in the woods and which insects to watch out for in the Midwest.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:728px;height:180px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655"
     data-ad-slot="2986685361"></ins>

What To Watch Out For

First, let’s discuss some common insects you may encounter in the Midwest and their potential dangers. Mosquitoes are a nuisance and can transmit diseases such as West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. Ticks can carry Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. Bees, wasps, and hornets can cause allergic reactions in some people. Chiggers, also known as harvest mites, can leave itchy bites that can last for days. Bot flies, while rare, do present a potential hazard as well, even in Michigan. Deer flies, black flies, and still other flies can leave nasty bites and be persistent. A good method of protection is to bring a face net with you on your hikes.

Treating Bug Bites

Now, let’s talk about ways to treat bug bites while in the woods. The first step is to wash the affected area with soap and water. This helps remove any dirt or bacteria that may have been introduced by the insect. After washing, apply a cold compress to the bite to reduce swelling and relieve itching. If you have access to an antihistamine cream or spray, this can also help alleviate itching and swelling.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:728px;height:180px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655"
     data-ad-slot="2986685361"></ins>

For tick bites, it’s important to remove the tick as soon as possible using tweezers. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady, even pressure. Avoid twisting or jerking the tick, as this can cause the mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin. After removing the tick, wash the bite site with soap and water and apply an antiseptic.

If you are experiencing an allergic reaction to a bite, such as swelling or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. An epinephrine auto-injector, such as an EpiPen, can be life-saving in the case of severe allergic reactions.

Preventing Bites

Prevention is always the best approach when it comes to bug bites. Wear long sleeves and pants when possible, use insect repellent containing DEET, and avoid areas with high insect activity, such as standing water and wooded areas.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:inline-block;width:728px;height:180px"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3910081242656655"
     data-ad-slot="2986685361"></ins>

In summary, bug bites can be a nuisance and potentially dangerous if not treated properly. Be aware of the insects in your area and take steps to prevent bites. If you are bitten, wash the affected area, apply a cold compress, and use antihistamine cream or spray if available. If you are experiencing an allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately. With these tips in mind, you can enjoy your time in the great outdoors without worrying about pesky insect bites.

The North Country Trail is a long-distance hiking trail that spans over 4,600 miles through the United States, from North Dakota to New York. The trail passes through some of the country’s most beautiful and remote areas, including national forests, state parks, and wilderness areas. In this blog post, we will explore the history of the North Country Trail, its unique features, and what makes it a must-visit destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Check out the North Country Trail Association for more.

History of the North Country Trail

The North Country Trail was established in 1980 as part of the National Trails System Act. It was created by merging several trails, including the Finger Lakes Trail, the Buckeye Trail, and the Superior Hiking Trail. The NCT is designed to showcase the natural beauty and diversity of the northern United States and promote recreation, education, and conservation.

Features of the North Country Trail

The North Country Trail offers many landscapes and ecosystems, including rugged mountains, rolling hills, vast prairies, and deep forests. Hikers can enjoy a variety of experiences along the trail, from backcountry camping and wildlife watching to waterfall hikes and historic sites.

One of the unique features of the North Country Trail is its accessibility. The trail passes through hundreds of public and private lands, making access from many different points easy. It also offers a range of hiking options, from day hikes to multi-day backpacking trips.

In addition to its natural beauty, the North Country Trail also features a rich cultural history. The trail passes through numerous historic sites, including Native American settlements, logging towns such as Lowell, Michigan, and mining communities. Hikers can learn about the history and culture of the northern United States while enjoying the scenic beauty of the trail. One drawback of the North Country Trail is a fair amount of road hiking occasionally happens between off-road sections. But one great feature is that this trail is easily accessible and broken up into sections. So unlike other trails, such as the Appalachian Trail, it’s something that you could conceivably hike but broken up nicely over a few weeks for a few years. Of course, you can also through-hike it, as many people do.

Why Hike the North Country Trail?

Hiking the North Country Trail is an adventure of a lifetime. The trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the northern United States. Whether you are an experienced hiker or a beginner, there is something for everyone along the trail.

Hiking the North Country Trail also offers numerous health benefits. Spending time in nature reduces stress, improves mood, and boosts physical health. Hiking can also be a great way to connect with friends and family or enjoy solitude and reflection.

Conclusion

The North Country Trail is a unique and inspiring destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. With its stunning natural beauty, rich cultural history, and accessibility, the trail offers something for everyone. Whether looking for a weekend hike or a multi-month backpacking trip, the NCT will surely be an unforgettable experience. So lace up your hiking boots, grab your backpack, and hit the trail!
